What is the Remove Image Color?

This is a simple chroma-key style tool: rather than replacing a color with another color, it sets the alpha channel of every matching pixel to zero, punching a transparent hole wherever that color appears. It works the same way green-screen removal does in video, just applied to a single still image and any color you choose, not only green.

How to Use the Remove Image Color

Does this work well on photos with a busy, non-uniform background?

It works best on flat, evenly colored backgrounds like a studio backdrop or solid-color graphic; a busy or gradient background will need a much higher tolerance and may still leave gaps or remove unintended areas.

Why do some edges look slightly off after removing the color?

Anti-aliased edges often blend the background color with the subject, so a thin fringe of the original color can remain right at the boundary even with a high tolerance.

What if I want to replace the color instead of removing it entirely?

Use the Replace Image Color tool instead, which swaps matching pixels for a different color rather than making them transparent.
