A transparent background lets a logo, icon or product sit cleanly on any colour or photo instead of inside an obvious box. If your image has a flat, single-colour backdrop — a plain white studio shot, for example — you can lift that colour out in one step.

This tool works by colour keying: you pick the colour to remove and a tolerance for how strict the match should be, and the matching pixels become transparent. It all runs in the browser, so even unreleased artwork stays on your device.

Getting the best result

Start with a flat background

Colour keying shines on solid backdrops. The more uniform the colour behind your subject, the cleaner the cut-out will be.

Tune the tolerance

Nudge the tolerance up to catch soft edges and slight shading, but not so far that it starts eating into your subject.

No. The colour is removed by your browser on your own device, so the PNG never leaves your machine and nothing is stored online.

How does the transparency work?

Will it work on any background?
