Does it handle leap years?
Yes. The weekday, week number and day-of-year figures are all worked out from the actual calendar date you pick, including 29 February in a leap year, using the same UTC-anchored arithmetic as the Day of Year Calculator.
Why does it warn about dates before 1582?
The calendar used today, the Gregorian calendar, only came into use in October 1582 and was adopted at different times in different countries over the following centuries. This tool projects Gregorian rules backward indefinitely, which is standard for software but means a date from, say, the 1500s will not necessarily match the day recorded in a historical document from that period.
Does my timezone change the answer?
No. You are picking a plain calendar date, not a moment in time, and the weekday is computed from that date's UTC components rather than from your device's local clock. The same date always returns the same weekday no matter where the calculation runs.
A calendar date and its weekday are locked together by fixed arithmetic; the only real risk is projecting that arithmetic further back than the calendar itself was ever in use, which is exactly what the range note above is flagging.
