This is deliberately not the same job as the Date Difference Calculator. That page measures calendar days between two dates, like 1 March to 15 March. This page measures the gap between two clock times on effectively the same day, the question behind "how long is my shift" or "how long was that call" — from 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM, for instance. The two times are converted to minutes since midnight and subtracted, with an explicit overnight option for the case where the end time belongs to the next day.

How does the overnight checkbox work?

Tick it when the end time belongs to the following day, such as a night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The calculator then adds 24 hours to the end time before subtracting, so the duration comes out positive and correct. Leave it unticked for a same-day span, and if the end time is genuinely earlier than the start time in that case, the tool shows a validation message instead of a wrong or negative answer.

Can I use it across time zones?

No. Both times are treated as plain clock readings in the same time zone; there's no timezone conversion involved, only the arithmetic between two numbers on a clock. If you need to compare a time in one city against a time in another, use the Meeting Scheduler or World Clock instead.

The overnight checkbox exists because the same pair of clock readings is genuinely ambiguous without it — 10 PM to 6 AM is either an eight-hour night shift or a nonsensical negative span, and only you know which one you mean.
